1. Mandatory Language Classes

Basic Information

During the Bachelor course, students must prove command of one foreign language at the B1 level according to Language SERR. Within the framework of attaining the B1 level, students must obtain a total of 6 credits.

The length of foreign language studies in the Bachelor’s program depends on the student´s knowledge of the language. This is ascertained by the placement test which is typically taken on the date of enrolment (usually late June prior to starting 1st year of studies). The maximum length of language studies in the Bachelor’s program is 4 semesters.

Based on the result of the placement test, students enrol in language courses for 2 (702SAB11, 702SAB12) or 4 semesters (702SAA21, A22, B11, B12). The test in 702SAB1 must be taken by the end of the 5th semester at the latest.

In the Master’s program, students must prove command of one foreign language at the B2 level according to Language SERR. Mandatory electives aiming to achieve B2 (in the case of English, 702SAB21, B22) must generate 6 credits within the Master’s program.

Note: Students in the linked FAMU study programs with matriculation year 2017 and below shall complete their language studies according to the rules applicable at the beginning of their Master’s program, i.e. a choice of German, French, Spanish, Italian and Russian, final achievement level A2, 5 credits.

Language courses are registered in KOS during the registration period as stipulated by the School Year Schedule .

Exceptions for Specific Programs

On top of the 6 credits for English (final achievement level B1), students in the Bachelor’s program in Production must obtain 3 credits for another foreign language (a choice of German, French, Spanish, Russian or Italian).

On top of the 6 credits for English, students in the subsequent Master’s program in Photograph Restoration must obtain 5 credits for another foreign language.

2. Optional Language Classes

Besides the mandatory language classes, CJP also offers the option of foreign language classes as electives. Please check the Subjects and Schedules section for the up-to-date range of classes available.

Language courses are registered during the registration period as stipulated by the School Year Schedule .

3. Recognition of Language Classes / Bachelor’s and Master’s programs

Basic Information

Foreign language examinations (English, French, Italian, German, Spanish or Russian) may only be recognised on the basis of a language certificate or language examination completed in the course of studies at another university, or based on the placement test result.

Any potential recognition of the subject is nothing the student can claim: it always depends on the recommendation of the expert department (the Language Preparation Centre in the case of foreign languages) and the final decision of the Vice-Dean (Studies) of the relevant Faculty.

Applications for language class recognition are assessed until October 14 (winter semester) and March 15 (summer semester).

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

• Students do not register any subjects; subjects are only registered if the application is positively accepted!
• Neither base-level state examination, nor general school-leaving examinations and OLS language tests are recognised!
• Language classes completed within the framework of Erasmus+ stays are only acknowledged as electives.

Recognition of Subjects Based on Language Certificates

Students shall submit a certified copy of the certificate and a filled-in form of the Subject Recognition Application.

• A language certificate may be recognised in the Bachelor’s program as subject 702SxZB1 Summary Examination (Foreign Language) B1 – please check here for a list of language varieties and codes thereof. The subject has no classes and is worth 6 credits.  
• In the Master’s program, students can have a language certificate recognised as subject 702SxB22 Advanced Foreign Language (parallel 99). Please check here for a list of language varieties and codes thereof.

If the application has been approved by the Vice-Dean for Study Affairs, the subject shall be registered in KOS by the Registrar´s Office. The student shall register for an examination date at the end of the semester to pass the oral part of the examination.

Certificate Validity

• B1 –  3 years as a maximum
• B2 –  5 years as a maximum
• C1 and C2 – unlimited

Recognition of Subjects Based on Language Course Completion at Another University/College

Students shall fill in the form of the Subject Recognition Application. A proof of subject completion (addendum to the degree, summary of subjects completed or a copy of the student book) and information on the language level of the subject concerned according to SERR (usually included in the subject annotation in the school´s Information System) shall be attached. The application cannot be assessed without the accompanying documents. The date of the examination may not be older than 3 years.

• Subjects completed at another university shall be recognised in the Bachelor’s program as subject 702SxZB1 Summary Examination (Foreign Language) B1 – please check here for a list of language varieties and codes thereof. The subject has no classes and is worth 6 credits. If the application has been approved by the Vice-Dean for Study Affairs, the Registrar´s Office registers the subject in the student´s KOS; the student shall register for an examination date at the end of the semester to pass the oral part of the examination.
• In the Master’s program, students can have an examination from another university recognised as subject 702SxB22 Advanced Foreign Language (parallel 99). Please check here for a list of language varieties and codes thereof

Applications for recognition and the supporting materials may be:

• Handed in to the CJP office,
• Put in the AMU Mailing Room box (ground floor, Rector´s Offices, AMU, Malostranské nám. 12 – next to the reception),
• Mailed to: CJP AMU, Malostranské nám. 12, 118 00 Praha 1.

CJP shall assess the application and send it to the Registrar´s Office which will register the subject in the student´s KOS; subsequently, the student shall register in KOS for an oral examination.

PhD Program

Within the framework of PhD studies at AMU, only language examinations passed at a Czech university within PhD study programs in direct connection to the PhD program studied at AMU may be recognised. The date of the examination may not be older than 3 years.

4. Foreign Languages in PhD Studies

Basic Information

Within PhD studies, students are obliged to prove command of two foreign languages: one at the B2 level according to Language SERR, another one at the B1 level.

There are no classes held; however, students may have consultations with the individual teachers, or they may enrol in language classes for students of the Bachelor and Master’s programs.

Information on Examinations

1st foreign language examination

The materials to be presented by the student prior to the examination (all documents must be delivered in the language in which the student is being tested):

• Structured professional CV (1-3 pages)
• Abstract of the PhD thesis (1-2 pages),
• Specialised text related to the field of study to the extent of 50 pages in the relevant foreign language (sources: expert publications, magazines or the Internet; however, the author of the text must always be indicated).  

The examination is in the oral form before a jury of CJP teachers (2 members). The examination concerns a verification of the student’s ability to present his/her PhD project at an adequate level, including the motivations, methods and expected results. The student is also expected to talk of his/her experience so far and of the prospects of the field of study.  The next part of the examination is based on a discussion of the text presented, and interpretation or translation of selected parts thereof.

2nd foreign language examination

The materials to be presented by the student prior to the examination (all documents must be delivered in the language in which the student is being tested):

• Specialised text related to the field of study to the extent of 20 pages in the relevant foreign language (sources: expert publications, magazines or the Internet; however, the author of the text must always be indicated).  

The examination is in the oral form before a jury of CJP teachers (2 members). The examination concerns a verification of the student’s ability to present his/her PhD project at an adequate level, including the motivations, methods and expected results. The student is also expected to talk of his/her experience so far and of the prospects of the field of study.  The next part of the examination is based on a discussion of the text presented, and interpretation or translation of selected parts thereof.

Class Registration and Examination Date Registration

Students register the subject for which they wish to sit an exam in KOS at the Registrar’s Office. A list of language subjects and codes thereof is available here.

A summary list of examination dates for academic year 2018/19 is given here. It is necessary to register for the selected examination date 4 weeks in advance at the latest.

The student must deliver the aforementioned written materials to the CJP Office (by mail, in person or to the AMU Mailing Room) no later than 3 weeks in advance. If the materials are not on an adequate level (project description containing many mistakes, selected text not being original or not relating to the field of study), CJP reserves the right not to accept the materials; if the situation is not rectified at least one week prior to the exam date, the student will not be permitted to take the exam.  

• Detailed information on the examination (time schedule, composition of the committee, room number) will be sent to the registered students’ school e-mail no later than one week prior to the examination.  
• The student is obliged to bring his/her own copy of the materials to the exam.

5. Czech Language Examination for Foreign Applicants for Studies in the Czech FAMU Study Programs

• Forms a part of the admission procedure for foreign applicants in the individual AMU programs taught in the Czech language.
   
• The required language level for studying at FAMU is B1 according to SERR
   
• The dates for Czech language examinations for foreign applicants for studies at FAMU are set for January to June of each year; more detailed information may be requested from the CJP AMU Office (cjp@amu.cz)
   
• A test of a corresponding to the required level and completed outside the AMU admission procedure may be recognised on the basis of a document presented.

Description of the Examination:

• Part 1: Grammar test (approx. 30 minutes)
• Part 2: Essay (topics: motivation for studies, knowledge of the Czech environment in the relevant field of study etc.) (approx. 30 minutes)
• Part 3: Interview with a teacher from the relevant faculty / field of study (approx. 20 minutes)

The examination is evaluated on the spot; a protocol of its course and result is compiled and archived by CJP AMU.
