Mentoring programme with Icelandic director Hlynur Pálmason

Our latest guest visiting FAMU is coming from Iceland. You may have heard of him in connection with the approaching FAMUFEST: our mentoring programme will offer masterclasses and one-on-one consultations with film director Hlynur Pálmason from 17 to 20 April

Hlynur Pálmason is an Icelandic film director and screenwriter. A native of Hornafjörður, Iceland, he studied film at the National Film School of Denmark. His debut feature film Winter Brothers (Vinterbrødre), debuted at the Locarno Film Festival in 2017 and went on to win the Bodil Award for Best Danish Film and the Robert Award for Best Danish Film, with Pálmason also winning the Robert Award for Best Director. His second feature film, A White, White Day (Hvítur, Hvítur Dagur), was selected to screen in the International Critics' Week section at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival and was chosen as Iceland's submission for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film at the 92nd Academy Awards in 2020. He followed up in 2022 with Godland (Vanskabte Land), which premiered at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival. 

The programme will take place at the FAMU Studio and will be divided into two parts: 

1) Part one: 17–18 April 2023 – screening of selected films and a masterclass. 

This part of the programme is open to all FAMU students and teachers who will have an opportunity to see films, which will then be analysed at a masterclass with the director the following day. The film copies to be screened will come from the Czech distribution and will be with the original sound design and Czech subtitles. Students can register for this part of the programme in the KOS as a module: 300MHPPM Mentoring Programme with Hlynur Pálmason – film screening and masterclass; capacity 100 seats. Two credits will reward attendance in the screening and masterclass. The director will explain his creative processes to the students. The masterclass will be held in English.

17 April 2023 – screening of selected films 

  • 12:30 doors open 
  • 13:00 Winter Brothers, 2017, 100 min., English subtitles + 2 short movies with English subtitles: NEST, 2022, 22 min., SEVEN BOATS, 2014, 10 min. 
  • 15:30 A White, White Day, 2019, 109 min., Czech subtitles + one short film with English subtitles: EN MALER, 2013, 30 min. 

18 April 2023 – masterclass 

  • 13:30 Doors open 
  • 14:00 Masterclass with Hlynur Pálmason moderated by Louise H. Johansen: From Fine Arts to Feature Film Narrative 
  • 16:30 Masterclass with Hlynur Pálmason moderated by Pavel Sladký: Nature, family, sins and mysteries of life. Feature films of Hlynur Pálmason 

Part two: One-on-one consultations – 19 and 20 April 2023 for FAMU students with Hlynur Pálmason 

This part of the programme will be accessible to selected students and their co-workers. Module 300MHPOC Mentoring programme with Hlynur Pálmason – one-on-one consultations will be rewarded with one credit. The application process for this part is already closed.
